Your personal brand is how you let the world see you. You have to power to show what you want as long as you know how to manage your personal brand. When people have come to know who you are and what you are good at, you become associated with that expertise and you can be the go-to person for your niche of expertise.

But the question is: How do you get others to recognize you for what you can do? How do you grow your following and establish your authority about a particular subject? Below are 5 ways on how you can develop and grow your personal brand.

Building an online presence

How you appear online is something that you need to monitor regularly so that you can improve on areas where needed. Do a Google search about yourself from time to time.

Your profiles in the social media platforms must be maintained properly to show your professionalism in every aspect and put you in a good light to those who will see your profile.

Another way of building your online presence is by purchasing a domain name that is under your name such as yourname.com. Even if you do not have any plans to use it anyway, just keep it. You never know when you might need it.

Be consistent in the brand that you build online. Get on social media sites such as LinkedIn, Google +, Twitter, and Facebook. Populate these sites with the keywords on the fields of your expertise. Pick three or five niches and use these in your social media profiles.

Be yourself

Building a brand around a “fake” persona will not last long. You have to act a certain way, and talk in a particular manner. This can prove to be exhausting because you are not being yourself.

Be true to yourself and do not pretend to be someone you’re not. As they say, practice what you preach because if you are faking a your brand or just putting up an act, others will see through the façade and not have trust in your principles. Even though initially, they may buy your act, inconsistencies will discredit you in the long-term.

Show people how different you are from others by identifying your core values and what you have to offer to others. Be honest about your weaknesses because this can be in your favour as it makes you more human and relatable.

Skills identification

You probably have a long list of things that you enjoy doing, your talents, abilities and qualities that make your entirety. List all these items and choose top 3 or top 5 things that you are good at. Which areas do you excel at?

Include a description of your three to five key talents with emphasis on your specialty and incorporate your value and passion in your social media profiles or personal website.

Get involved

People must be aware that you exist and that you have something worthwhile to offer them. With these, you have to make some noise by being involved in the online community. You can do this by sharing on forums, doing book reviews on sites such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble, or by simply writing a blog.

Commenting on topics related to your niche is also a good way to establish your personal brand and show that you are an authority in that industry.

There are also professional associations that you can join in order to get a wide audience reach by contributing articles, or holding webinars.

Room for improvement

No matter how well versed you are in the industry of your choice, it is important to know that things today are very dynamic and you must be able to keep up and adjust with the changes. Always find ways to improve and continue to expand your horizons.

Learning and developing new things will keep you on your toes and on the very top of your industry.

As you go along establishing your personal brand, there will be many opportunities that will come your way. The more you work on your online presence, the more people around you will consider you as an expert in your field .

Always remember that starting your personal brand may lead to some disappointments. But take it as part of the experience, do not let negativity hinder you from achieving your goals. When you have already established the framework, nurture it, and make it grow. You will definitely reap your benefits in due time.
