Staying motivated: 5 easy steps

With inadequate leadership, lack of career progression and insufficient training opportunities, it’s not surprising that Singapore workers come in last, yet again, in the recent 2016 Southeast Asia’s Job Happiness Index. When there are so many reasons to be pessimistic, how can you stay sufficiently motivated when you need to be?

Here are 5 foolproof ways to getting and staying motivated:

1. Find the good

Maslows’s 1943 model of hierarchy needs clearly pointed out that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. These needs are broken down into five stages:

  1. Basic like food, shelter and rest
  2. Safety such as security
  3. Belongingness such as friendships and relationships
  4. Self-esteem needs such as pride and prestige
  5. Self-actualisation, when one has achieved one’s full potential

So begin by finding the contentment from your very basic needs and as you slowly but surely move up the 5 stages, you will soon find it less and less difficult to stay inspired and remain dedicated to achieving more from your professional and personal lives.


2. Surround yourself with positivity

It is not easy to find allies in an organisation with high turnover rates, low employee morale and ineffective bosses. When this is the case, turn outwards for positive outlooks, whether they are for your current employment situation or changes in your personal life. Engage a reputable Executive Life Coach who can guide you out of your melancholy or talk to your friends and family. Sometimes the solution to a problem is simply not to come up with one, but to just talk about it.


3. Be mindful

Not only is practising mindfulness beneficial for your body, it also helps you focus and manage stress. In today’s hectic and competitive workplace, it is not easy to carve out time to go to the gym or spend some quality leisure time with loved ones. Engaging in mindfulness takes only five minutes when done right and you can achieve it without meditation. Simply live your life, moment by moment and be mindful.


4. Think different

There is always more than one way to achieve a goal. It’s just a matter of whether you’re willing to be open-minded and not limit yourself to a one-directional way of thinking. Taking this approach means that you will stop wasting time, learn to accept that perhaps some things really do not need to change and come up with that breakthrough you have been waiting for.


5. Pat yourself at the back

Sometimes, no matter what you’ve tried, nothing seems to work. You’ve been doing your due diligence but you’ve not been getting any job interviews. Or perhaps you have been keeping longer hours at work but your bosses don’t seem to notice; and what’s more you feel that you deserve a break but you just don’t know where to start.

Begin by patting yourself in the back. If no one acknowledges how hard you’ve worked, you should do it yourself. In fact, studies have shown that rewarding yourself after a job well done not only increases productivity but increases the level of dopamine in your brain that get you motivated.

Whatever the situation you may be in that seems hard for you to get and stay motivated, just remember what football legend Pelé lived by: “The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.”
